Mariposa’s Art
Mariposa’s Art programs provide after-school art and music programs where youth learn to express themselves, creatively problem-solve, make healthy choices, and positively affect their communities. Visit www.mariposasart.org for a fuller description of the program. Through Mariposa’s Art, a program of the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County, high school students become leaders, mentors and role models by co-teaching with professional artists in schools lacking funds to support the arts during the regular school day. Founded in 1998, Mariposa’s Art will serve more than 2,000 students this year . The Mariposa’s Art Art Teach and Guitar Teach programs are a model community service-learning program where high school students engage in an intensive teacher training and, together with professional Teaching Artists, travel to elementary schools and teach art or guitar to elementary and middle school students. Through Art & Leadership small groups form that create freedom and ability to develop strong relationships and learn from each other. The year-long programs are broken into four eight-week program cycles which focus on recognizing key health issues; expanding leadership skills; making positive choices; and exploring art, music, and dance. Writing and public speaking activities are integrated into each lesson. Sessions include: Speak Up and Express Yourself, Health, Conflict Resolution and Dreaming Big. |
