Exhibits at the County Government Center
|
|
The Cultural Council is proud to provide space in our office for exhibiting the 2-dimensional work of local artists!
How it works: Artists applying for exhibit space at the Santa Cruz County Government Center undergo a rigorous screening by their peers and Government Center Personnel. To exhibit at the Cultural Council, the screening goes through one more level--that by Cultural Council staff.
Chosen exhibitors will display their work for 3 months, and will be featured artists on our website.
The Cultural Council office is not considered a public viewing venue. Featuring on our website the work of local artists who exhibit at the CCSCC office allows for public exposure to these talented exhibitors' work.

Sandra Cherk
I use pastels to paint landscapes of the places I love. I feel fortunate to live in Santa Cruz, an area with spectacular beauty--the forests, ocean shorelines and open hills are some of my favorite spots, both in which to spend time and to paint. With a second home in Greece also close to the mountains and sea, I am twice lucky. I am struck by the atmosphere, interplay of sunlight and shadows, and the natural compositions of the place. Most of my paintings have a serene, quiet quality to them.
Pastels are the perfect medium for me. Their vivid, rich colors and blendability give my landscapes a trademark softness. Besides landscapes, I enjoy painting village scenes, architecture and still-life.
Be sure to stop by the Cultural Council office for a look at Sandra's amazing work!

Aaron Johnson
Aaron Johnson's oil paintings and woodcut prints explore the natural world and our human relationships within it. Gestures of California trees are often an inspiration, with an eye for the underlying structure and geometry of their forms. The paintings use the traditional materials of oil on linen canvas and the woodcuts are printed from multiple woodblocks on a 1947 Vandercook hand press.
Aaron studied art at UC Santa Cruz, with a focus on painting, printmaking, and drawing. He gained more experience as a printer during his years at The Yolla Bolly Press, where he served as the letterpress printer for numerous limited-edition books. Currently, he paints and prints in his studio in the countryside north of Watsonville.
