Carolina McCall: Vibrant Scenes of Indigenous Lives

February - April 2012

“I make my art because I love to make art and I need to make it. I enjoy the viscosity of oils, the vivid colors, the way it feels on my brush, and the excitement of pushing a brush full of paint through a color field, adding bright lights and white to accentuate, and highlighting patterns of light and color. I like to develop and nurture patterns of detail, color and light as they move through a painting. Sometimes I feel that I am inside my painting while I work.” – Carolina McCall

The scenes of Mayan markets and street life show a stunning everyday experience, with elaborate and culturally significant weaving and embroidery that conveys the vitality of this resilient people. Carolina is attracted to the style and values of indigenous peoples’ art, cultures, and ways of life, and she celebrates them in her paintings.

While the CCSCC show is still hanging, Carolina and her husband Cliff will leave on another trip to the Guatemala highlands. Along the way, they will continue their ongoing blog at Carolina’s website, www.carolinamccall.com, posting sketches and photos of what they see.

Carolina McCall

Carolina McCall began her painting career with a BFA from the University of Texas in 1968, and later went on to earn an MS and PhD from Cornell University and provide social services to poor and threatened clientele. In Mexico, she became inspired by indigenous people, living with some of them and visiting others. Carolina entered the Santa Cruz art community only a year ago via the 17th Avenue Studios, and she is delighted to display her work at the CCSCC’s new offices.

About Featured Artists

The Cultural Council is proud to provide space in our office for exhibiting the 2-dimensional work of local artists!

How it works: Artists applying for exhibit space at the Santa Cruz County Government Center undergo a rigorous screening by their peers and Government Center Personnel. To exhibit at the Cultural Council, the screening goes through one more level--that by Cultural Council staff.

Chosen exhibitors will display their work for 3 months, and will be featured artists on our website.

The Cultural Council office is not considered a public viewing venue. Featuring on our website the work of local artists who exhibit at the CCSCC office allows for public exposure to these talented exhibitors' work.
