Disaster Response: Supporting Flood Survivors
Following the February flooding of Penitencia Creek in San Jose, Catholic Charities has been actively involved in disaster relief efforts to assist families displaced from their homes. The severe water damage caused many to lose essential belongings, including furniture, clothing, and other household items.

Among those affected was single father Derrick (pictured) and his two daughters, who, along with other residents of the Betty Ann Gardens apartment complex, faced significant hardship when an atmospheric river caused the creek to overflow. The flooding impacted 41 individuals, including children, single-parent households, caregivers for elderly parents, and individuals living with disabilities.

Catholic Charities’ Disaster Response Team has been working in partnership with local agencies to provide ongoing support for these displaced families, assisting survivors in accessing essential resources and services. The 14 affected households, all of which are low-income, have faced immense challenges due to the water damage. While the property manager is covering hotel stays and building repairs, personal belongings lost in the flood will not be replaced. Catholic Charities remains committed to helping these families rebuild their lives by ensuring they receive the necessary support during this difficult time.
