Letter from a Service Recipient: Gustavo’s Story

Gustavo Hernandez

24/7 Dad Completion Certificate

My name is Gustavo Hernández, and I’ve lived in the Santee community since the start of the pandemic. I’m a proud father of three and have always had a deep love for cooking. But during one of the most difficult chapters of my life, I found myself struggling with substance abuse, battling for custody of my children, and feeling completely overwhelmed.

It was in the middle of that storm that I first walked into the Family Resource Center (FRC), hoping to find help. I didn’t know what I was looking for exactly—maybe someone to talk to, maybe just a little bit of hope. I ended up finding so much more.

After speaking with one of the FRC staff members, they took the time to really listen to me. They didn’t judge. They offered friendship and guidance. They told me about the workshops and resources available—programs that could support me in becoming a better father and in healing myself. I remember saying, “I’m ready.”

That was the turning point. I started participating in workshops like Triple P (Positive Parenting Program), SEEDS for Parents, and 24/7 Dad, as well as counseling and substance abuse prevention classes. Week by week, I started learning new tools—not just for parenting, but for life. I learned how to communicate better, how to manage stress, how to be more present with my kids.

Slowly, things started to change. I stopped using drugs. I regained custody of my children. And as I rebuilt my life, I also reignited my passion for cooking. With the support and encouragement from the FRC team, I launched my own catering business—something I had only dreamed about before.

Today, I’m proud to say that I’m not only sober and thriving as a father, but I’m also giving back to my community. I help provide meals for FRC events and workshop graduations, and I show up for the same families who are on journeys like mine.

The Family Resource Center didn’t just give me resources—they believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. These workshops changed my life, and I’m forever grateful.

Thank you for letting me share my story.
